Visual Arts

Visual arts is a regular component of programing for students from JK through Grade 8. Students are able to participate in meaningful creative art activities which focus on the elements and principles of design, using a variety of media. They are also exposed to a variety of works of art as a means of fostering art appreciation, including art that reflects our distinct heritage as Canadians, and celebrates Canada’s First Nations culture.

Students have the opportunity to showcase their artistic talents in a more formal setting at various times throughout the year, both within our school and at various local venues such as the Markham Fair and Latcham Gallery.

Performing Arts

Each year, the student body is given the opportunity to participate in the performing arts program. This includes drama activities and the production of a school-wide musical. Through these presentations, students are able to develop and share their talents in front of an audience, which helps them build their confidence.

Music

Music is an integral subject for every student from Kindergarten to Grade 8. In the early years, students explore music and movement through a variety of songs and percussion instruments. In the primary grades, students continue to learn the elements of music through singing, recorders, and ukulele. Students in Grades 5 to 8 are given the opportunity to learn a band instrument and develop musical skills through both individual and ensemble playing. Performance opportunities at SCS include our annual Christmas concert, Spring Musical, and Grandparents Day.
